Pig Farmer 2008 comes from Münsterland

Award for use of Qalovis biomass treatment system

Jörg Stegemann, a pig farmer based in Münster-Nienberge, was honored with the Pig Farmer Award 2008 by the DLG (German Agricultural Society) and the European Pig Producers Club (EPP). Mr Stegemann was awarded the prize on 10 November 2008 by the president of the EPP, Per Bach Laursen, during the international pig event in advance of EuroTier 2008. The farmer was recognized for his use of the innovative Qalovis Farmer Automatic Energy integral system for processing liquid pig manure. Thanks to this system, Stegemann is able to pursue sustainable liquid manure management together with low-emission housing. Further prize winners are Angelique and Kristof Verschelde from Nevele (Belgium) as well as Henry and Nelly van Asten from Van Asten Tierzucht Nordhausen GmbH & Co. KG based in Nordhausen (Germany). The award comes with prize money of € 2,000.

Integral system comprising several components
Stegemann had the biomass treatment system from Qalovis Farmer Automatic Energy installed in his pig pens. The system converts the animal manure into a high-quality fuel so it can be utilized to generate electricity and heat.

The system comprises several components: the Qalovis Separation System automatically removes manure from the pens whilst also separating the urine and manure. In the Drying System, the manure is dried and converted into high-quality fuel. The connected Pelletizer turns the dried manure into pellets in order to efficiently get more use out of it in the form of fertilizer or fuel and finally the Power System with the FleXgen Stirling engine is able to convert the treated pig manure into electricity and heat.

About the Pig Award
The Pig Award has been conferred ahead of the EuroTier animal trade fair since 2006. An independent jury made up of experts and farmers carefully analyzes the farms on the shortlist on the basis of economic and production-related criteria. During visits to the farms themselves, the operating conditions are inspected. The jury also takes into account the development of both the farm and farmer in particular as regards the operation's perspectives and future plans and their implementation on site.
